Last chance car free biking Banff

Ride Hwy 1A Banff to Johnston Canyon car free.

Hwy 1A is currently closed to vehicle traffic from the turnoff just out of Banff, all the way to Johnston Canyon with limited traffic from there to Castle Junction.  The entire 1A will reopen on Thursday if reports are correct, so lets take advantage of this.  Tuesday is supposed to be the best weather of the week.

We will meet and park at Fenlands Recreation Center at about 10 am.  From there we will bike along Vermillion Lakes road (not car free) for approx 3 km then ride the paved path to Hwy 1A.  The road will be car free until Johnston's Canyon.  Between Johnston Canyon and Castle Junction there may be a few vehicles as people who are staying at Johnston's Canyon Resort are allowed to drive in from Castle Junction.

This is a casual relaxed ride and open to all ages and abilities.  We will try to ride in pairs or groups if enough people.  Cycle as far as you feel comfortable and then return.

If you show up with a $10,000 bike and a Tour de France Team outfit, you will be sent ahead as bear bait.  Yes there may be bears and other wildlife along the way.  There was on Saturday so bring your Bear Spray.

It is approx 24 km one way to Johnston Canyon and  a further 6 or so km one way from there to Castle Junction.  So bike to your comfort level distance wise.

Just an FYI, there is some parking at the the beginning of 1A so if you want to avoid all cars, you can try that - just let us know to meet you there.  There may not be enough room for all of us there so that is why we are parking at Fenlands.
