Highwood Pass biking - from south end (near Longview)

Hwy 40 over the Highwood Pass is still closed to motorized traffic until June 15th..  We did the ride from the North gate on June 3rd.  Our opportunity to take advantage of this and get a nice road ride without any vehicles is closing fast.

Great opportunity to spot wild life.

Weather forecasts have mixed messages depending on which one you read - it is a high mountain area so weather can change rapidly.  Expect cool temperatures and be prepared for cool and wet just in case.
We will meet at the South Gate at 10:30 am and head up to the pass, biking for about 2 hours or so.  Faster riders may want to go a little further.  We will try to meet near the high point for lunch if weather is OK, then turn around and head back.  The return trip is pretty quick
Allow yourself time to drive from Calgary.

I will be the guy with the dreamsicle bike at the gate.  (Orange Creamsicle colour)

Post trip report
Biking June 10th Highwood Pass South end (near Longview)

So the plan for this day was to ride for a couple of hours, see how far we got, then head back.  Due to the long line of cars parking and no cell coverage, we missed one of our group who ended up going ahead.  The rest of us set out with no particular objective.  One member was on his first ride of the season and made the strategic and smart decision to keep it reasonable and headed back just past he 1/2 way point.  The rest of us soldiered on and made it to the top of the pass after detouring around some goats getting their salt fix off the road.  Lots of people out - about 70 people at the summit when we arrived and lots more on the road.  The problem when I got back to the gate, I found my car was much further away than I remembered parking it.
77km 1098m 5 hours approx with stops for views and wildlife.
