Club Favorite

This jade-coloured lake is a year round popular destination and you are unlikely to be alone. In addition to the hiking crowd, scramblers use the trail to access Mount Chester, Galatea and Gusty Peak and boulders to access Elephant Rocks.

The start up steeply inclined logging roads is less than aesthetic, but after that it‘s a pleasant and mostly easy walk though alternating forest and flowery meadows.

The picturesue valley to the north of Chester Creek holds three small lakes. From the lakeshore trail, we will take the well-used trail that climbs over the intervening ridge of larches and jumbo-sized boulders to the valley of Chester Creek. The trail continues upstream to the first tarn, whose damp shores are beautified by clouds of silky white cotton grass. The finger valley between Mt. Galatea and Gusty Peak is a goat hot spot and if we‘re lucky, you can spot them feeding on deelicacies in damp, slanting guillies high up to the right.

Hiking Distance: 4.3 Kilometers One Way + 2.2 Kilometers to Three Lakes Valley

Height Gain: 305 Meters / 1000 Feet + 244 Meters / 800 Feet

High Point: 2210 Meters / 7250 Feet + 2454 / 8080 Feet

Difficulty Level: Easy / Moderate

Carpool Depart: Please arrive 15 minutes before so carpooling can be arranged, as we will be leaving at 8:00 a.m. sharp. The Club suggests a compensation of 6 cents per kilometer both ways for the driver(s).

Travel Distance: 145 Kilometers One Way / 2 Hours Approximately

Description: The Rockbound Lake trip is a rather rigorous 8.4 kilometers hike carrying the hiker high behind the ramparts of Castle Mountain to the snow-fed waters of two distinctly different tarns, one a placid and green mirror fringed by a pleasantly open subalpine forest and meadowland; the other a cold, grey sheet of water contained within a basin of steep scree slopes and massive, tumbled boulders. Much of the trail to the lakes is quite a steep access road. If we time it just right, we may see the larch trees in all their glory.

Description: The C Level Cirque trail is one of the more attractive hikes in the Banff-Lake Minnewanka vicinity. In less than 4 km it climbs past artifacts of the long-defunct Bankhead coal operation and a panoramic viewpoint for Lake Minnewanka to a high, rockbound pocket beneath the sheer east face of Cascade Mountain.

Cirque is a French word you will not likely find in your English dictionary—a term used by geologists to describe a semicircular, bowl-shaped depression created by an alpine glacier. C Level Cirque is a miniature example of the phenomenon. Though the glacier that produced the basin has long since disappeared, snow often lingers in the basin into midsummer. As it retreats, a carpet of yellow glacier lilies spreads across the damp, subalpine soil near its entrance. A tiny pond below the trail provides water throughout the summer, fed by the extensive snowfield on the talus slopes above.

Please bring traction aids with you just in case there is snow or ice on the trail.

Hiking Distance: Short Day Hike, 1.5 Hours One Way
Elevation Gain: 455 M (1500 Feet)
Maximum Elevation Gain: 1920 M (6300 Feet)
Duration: Short Day Hike

Remdezous Point: Please arrive 15 minutes before.
