A short easy walk on a fire road up Mockingbird Hill to a lookout where you are treated to a 360 degree panoramana view. Obviously, this trail is very popular of its short length and proximity to campgrounds and youth camps.

A fairly easy forest trail (hikers only) leads to Jumpingpound Ridge Trail from where it is inly a short step to the summit of Jumpingpound Mountain – a superb panoramic viewpoint. Even after the snow flies and a biting wind sweeps across the upper slopes, a packed trail testifies to its popularity. Possibly, this is because it is by far the shortest rout to the summit.

Description: The Grass Pass is raked by warm Chinook winds, which makes grassy Grass Pass a popular year-round objective, even though a fairly strenuous trail up Pack Trail Coulee, one ends up with awesome views. With longer daylight hours we will extend the walk to connect with Gunnery Creek to make a loop. Naming Note: Pack Trail Coulee and Grass Pass were in local use during the 1930s and 40s and were finally made official in 1980.

On Sunday, June 23rd, we have a special day-hike planned to the Eden Valley Reserve. It will allow participants to participate in a moderate 5 km hike on the beautiful Eden Valley Reserve with stunning rocky mountain views. Our guide for the day will be Keith Lefthand of Weaseltail Enterprises and in addition to leading our hike, he‘ll also share information about local indigenous customs and his ancesteral heritage. Additional cultural practices such as indigenous dancing and story-telling will be offered and weather permitting, a dip in the Highwood River swimming hole behind Keith‘s home may be on the agenda! A tasty meal will also be served as we converse in Keith‘s family teepee near the end of the day. Attendees aged 13 and up are $95 per person. Younger children may attend for $30 per child. The Calgary Ski Club is kindly subsidizing members at $30 per person making age 13+ $65 after member subsidy and member participants aged 12 and under free. Non-members are allowed to attend with members however they will not be subsidized and the trip requires a minimum of 4 member participants to run.
CAR POOLING: 9 am meet at the West Hills Shopping Centre parking lot outside of Winners. Look for Cindy with her white BMW X3.
We will convene here to carpool, leaving by 9:10 am.
The distance to Eden Valley is 93 km each way. (Carpooling fee to driver from each passanger: $20 if 2 in the car, $14 if 3 in the car, $10 if 4 in the car).
We will head south on the ring road (AB201) to 22X where we turn right onto 22x. South on Hwy 22 to Longview and then right on Ab 541 past Green Ford sign and left onto the bridge entrance to Eden Valley Indian Reserve. Park on the near side of the bridge and regroup to enter the reserve together and head to our meeting place at Keith‘s property.

“The Taylor Lake trail is one of the most accessible hanging valley lake trails along the southwest side of the Bow Valley between Banff and Lake Louise. It is every bit as scenic as its sister lakes and offers the bonus of two attractive side trips from its shores” (Canadian Rockies Trail Guide, Bart Patton and Brian Robinson)

Description: The Rockbound Lake trip is a rather rigorous 8.4 kilometers hike carrying the hiker high behind the ramparts of Castle Mountain to the snow-fed waters of two distinctly different tarns, one a placid and green mirror fringed by a pleasantly open subalpine forest and meadowland; the other a cold, grey sheet of water contained within a basin of steep scree slopes and massive, tumbled boulders. Much of the trail to the lakes is quite a steep access road. If we time it just right, we may see the larch trees in all their glory.
