Rawson Lake / Kananaskis Lakes Trail West
Description: The trail, steep enough to make you sweat, leads to a beautiful jade lake under Mt. Sarrail. Also known are grizzlies who frequent the trail and lake area.
We will follow the Upper Lake Kananaski Lake trail clockwise along the south shore. You undulate in and out of every indentation and in 1.2 kilometers, just beyond the Sarrail Creek bridge and waterfall, we will turn left at the junction onto Rawson Lake Trail.
Almost straighaway, you're into zigzags, climbing through musty old spruce forest. The gradient eases half a kilometer before the lake and it's here you encounter a broadwalk. Near the outlet we will hop down a paved side trail for the classic viewpoint of the lake backdropped by the vertical east face of Mt. Sarrail.
The main trail continues along the southeast shore below a line of cliffs, en route passing a biffy. Officially, it ends half-way along the lake in a strip of meadow with interpretive signs. Some of you may recognize the sign as coming from the decommissioned King Creek Interpretive Trail.
