Cycle 1A Highway (closed to vehicle traffic)
About this event
Ride car free to Castle Junction from Banff
Longest Day of the year! Longest ride perhaps?
Starting Point: Fenlands Center, Banff
Take the second Banff exit (Norquay exit) and turn into Banff rather than to Norquay. The Fenlands will be on your left just before the Banff town sign.
Gathering Time: 9:30 am Fenlands Monday June 21st
Trip Distance: This will vary depending on how long you want to go.
The route.
From Fenlands via Vermillion Lakes to Fireside (start of 1A) is 6.5 km
From 1A to Johnson Canyon is another 18km - Note - Lunch stop here
From Johnson Canyon to Castle Junction is another 6 km.
So from Fenlands to Castle Junction is 30.5 km one way or 61 km round trip. These are approximate distances as the return trip is slightly different..
Difficulty: Intermediate, there are some long grades, and up and down in both directions. Some participants will be riding on mountain bikes and the pace will be slower. Faster riders may go ahead. Please ride to your fitness level in terms of distance ensuring you have the oomph to return.
Hazards: Bring your bear spray. Watch for cyclists who wander all over the road without shoulder checking.
Bike Equipment: Your bike should have a bell to warn wildlife and other cyclists. It is also good practice to have a spare inner tube and an air pump.
Current Pandemic Conditions: please refer to our Covid page. You will need a mask to use the washrooms unless you use the the same washrooms the bears do.
There is another ride scheduled for 1A in July on the weekend for you weekend warriors who are not able to ride mid week. Cycle 1A Highway (closed to vehicle traffic) - 2021-07-18
