Here's something different - a chance to visit the famous Painted Canyon and view the First Nations pictographs. Also a chance to complete a regular hike with moderate difficulty afterwards. You will also get to wash your hot tired feet in the Highwood River whether you want to or not - see below.
Hike Distance: 16 km return
Elevation gain: 125 metres to Painted Canyon, 520 metres to Zephyr/Bear Col
Difficulty level: easy to Painted Canyon, moderate to Zephyr/Bear col
Driving distance to trail head: 110 km from Calgary
Trailhead location: Sentinel Day Use Area on Highway 541
Potential hazards: we must ford the Highwood River! Participants must have water shoes or an old pair of running shoes - bare feet will not work in the Highwood River! We are planning to ford the river at a relatively low water level - water depth is expected to be about 60 centimetres. Always bring bear spray as well, as we will be in lovely country for bears!
